Un OJO en Tenerife

and space became a simple probabilistic foam in effervescence, spiked with wormholes. »

Light of the days fled, Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter.

In the beginning.

I was born in 1982.

The notions of travel in time and space have always fascinated me.

My first reading of the time Machine of Herbert George Wells, then the reckless traveller of René Barjavel have sensitized me to these notions of science fiction, these notions of travel through space and time.

Later, it will be films and series of the same genre, which would keep my attention:

The back to the Future trilogy, whose first part came out 1985, directed by Robert Zemeckis, tells the story of Marty crossing past and future eras, following the episodes, in order to save the life of his friend Emmett Brown “Doc” or his own Existence.

Stargate, the Gate of the Stars, in 1994 by Roland Emmerich, in which explorers cross the Stargate to liberate a planet and its inhabitants, located at the other end of the universe, from the grip of an oppressor called RA.

The Sliders series: The Parallel Worlds, aired at the end of the years 90, in which the heroes get lost across a wormhole (wormhole) and glide over the episodes of a parallel world in the hope of coming back one day in their reality.

In 2004, I discovered the novel that will inspire me this project:

I devour light of the days fled, written by Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter in 2000. In this novel, researchers have managed to use wormholes, first of all to pass computer data as we do now through the Internet network. Through the technical advances, they will be able to transmit video images from any point of the world, then from the universe and to finish from any place and moment in the history of the universe. This find will be called Camver. Another variant of this technology will create a new type of individuals named “seals” that have the characteristic of being connected to each other by means of a wormhole directly implanted in the brain, thus allowing them to form one.

My first steps to immersive video

It’s been a few years, during a road trip carried out in Spain, the idea took me back memories in video, which would then be compiled into a kind of audiovisual guide of sites to discover.

This idea is to make videos rotating on a tripod and this on a horizontal angle of 360 °, as a logical sequel to the viewer “View-Master” My childhood, for which we brought back pictures cards during our holiday.

Sadly, the experience was not conclusive due to the lack of robustness of the equipment and the failure to stabilise the device.

Today, the world of video technology has taken a step forward, with the placing on the market of cameras filming at 360 °, reliving my desire to repeat the unsuccessful essay carried out a few years on the screen.

The era of smartphones and connected

Today, advances in technology and computing offer US personal computers (smartphones), holding in the pocket, allowing us to do word processing, run advanced video games and watch videos in lines of High quality.

The advent of the 4g wireless connection and the Wifi hotspots now present in the major public and private parts of our daily life allow us to connect at any time to the Internet, to the various social networks, to sharing ideas, to Content, photos and videos.

We see already arriving on the market of electronic devices, such as the flexible screens described in light of the days fled.

Let’s take a step back

I grew up in a period of time, in a company that does not yet know the mobile phone, the internet is still only a simple tool for universities to communicate their research results.

I remain amazed (despite my position as an audiovisual technician aficionado of new technologies) to see the speed with which the multifunctional mobile (smartphone) has spread around us.

At the end of November 2017, the ARCEP (regulatory authority for electronic communications and posts) estimated that more than seven out of ten French, or 73% of the French, had a smartphone and internet phone subscription going with it.

The number of smartphones is 2 480.4 million in the world in 2018 (source https://fr.statista.com).

The French movement of “yellow waistcoats” shows us today that these devices (smartphones and Internet) allow the connection of individuals separated from hundreds of kilometers, and thus form a certain collective consciousness.

These questions that are trotting in my head

ʘ are we not, sleep and already, by means of our mobile phones, equipped with quality cameras, joined as these characters of light of the days fled?

ʘ the online Youtube platform not be considered a wormhole, of “Camver”, allowing to transfer its and video through space and time to spectators, wherever they are?

ʘ do we not evolve sleep and already in a society worthy of a science fiction scenario?

“Un OJO en Tenerife” is a technico-artistic project, using Youtube as a glass hole (“Camver”), which makes it possible to travel in time and towards the island of Tenerife in the middle of the Canary Islands (North Atlantic Ocean).

It is intended to be viewed on smartphone, with headphones (in order to enjoy the binaural audio) and is optimal to be viewed through virtual reality headphones. It is still open to other media (laptops and desktops, tablets,…) it.

He wants to be recreative and playful, to discover the world of the connected, the universe of immersive video, the cultural richness and the richness of the natural landscapes of the island of Tenerife.

It opens once a day, at the time and at the place it feels appropriate.

His ambition is to become a witness to his time, life and traditions in the Canary Islands.  To allow everyone, wherever they are, to come regularly to take a breath of air on the island of Tenerife, while being in their couch or in the office.

Always have a look in Tenerife,
